Maps4Kids Climbs Kilimanjaro

In late January, I set off on a great adventure – a childhood dream dating back to when I saw a documentary about the massive mountain. Mt. Kilimanjaro.

It stands 19,341 (5,895m) feet above sea level, is this tallest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Each year, thousands of people climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. This makes for a somewhat crowded scene, as basically a small village moves up the mountain each day, from camp to camp. Luckily, the Tanzanian government has highly regulated the adventures and manages the cleanliness of the mountain with great vigor. I recall vividly on the second morning looking back down on our previous camp and it was as if no one had been there at all !

We were a group of three and had a support crew of 15 led by KiliBase Adventures. Under the guidance of Sifael and Gabriel, we set off on a seven day hike – 5 days up and 2 days down. Unfortunately, we had a lot of rain the first few days. Thankfully, the weather cleared by the fourth day and we had a tremendous summit push under the stars, reaching the summit just as the sun came up.

There is much to tell about our adventure but it might be best to watch the video my friends Brad and Lesley put together. Enjoy !
