It is connected with Mehr, also known as Mithra, an important figure in ancient Iranian religious tradition.

Mehregan celebrates the gathering of crops, the changing seasons, friendship, and community. Historically, it was one of the important celebrations in the Persian calendar and was regarded as the autumn counterpart to Nowruz, the Persian New Year in spring.

Traditionally, families prepare special tables filled with fruits, nuts, flowers, and other foods. Pomegranates, grapes, apples, and other seasonal products may be included. Celebrations can feature music, dancing, food, and gatherings with family and friends.

Mehregan is still celebrated today, particularly in Iran and among Persian communities elsewhere. Its precise origins are difficult to establish, but historical evidence connects the festival with ancient Iranian traditions going back more than 2,500 years.

Geography connection: Iran has an extraordinary variety of landscapes, including high mountains, deserts, fertile valleys, and coastal regions. These different environments influence the crops people can grow.

Jewish Tradition: Sukkot, the Festival of Booths

Another ancient harvest celebration is Sukkot, a Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Booths or Tabernacles.

Sukkot has roots in ancient Israelite agricultural traditions. It marked the gathering of the autumn harvest and also became an important religious celebration.

The holiday lasts seven days. Families traditionally build temporary shelters called sukkot, decorate them with fruits and plants, and share meals inside them.

These shelters help people remember the temporary dwellings used by the ancient Israelites during their journey through the wilderness, as described in the Hebrew Bible.

Sukkot is celebrated by Jewish communities around the world, usually in September or October, according to the Hebrew calendar.

It is one of the oldest documented harvest-related celebrations still observed today. Ancient references to harvest festivals appear in the Hebrew Bible, although the traditions themselves may be older.

Geography connection: The ancient agricultural calendar in this part of the eastern Mediterranean was strongly influenced by the seasons and rainfall. In 2026, that falls on November 26.

The holiday’s history includes a 1621 harvest gathering at Plymouth, in present-day Massachusetts, where English colonists and Wampanoag people shared a meal.

However, the history of Thanksgiving is more complicated than a single feast. Indigenous peoples had their own traditions of giving thanks long before European colonists arrived, and colonization brought profound changes and hardships to Native communities.

In 1863, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving. Over time, the holiday developed into the family celebration many Americans recognize today.

Popular Thanksgiving foods include roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

The foods themselves tell a geography story:

Turkey: Native to North America.

Pumpkin: Cultivated by Indigenous peoples in the Americas long before European colonization.

Corn: Developed and cultivated in the Americas thousands of years ago.

Cranberries: Native to North America and grown in suitable wetland environments.

Geography connection: Find Massachusetts on a map of the United States. Much of Canada has a colder climate and a shorter growing season than many parts of the United States. In many regions, the main harvest arrives earlier in the year.

Canadian Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather and enjoy a special meal. Turkey, potatoes, vegetables, and pumpkin pie may appear on the table, although families have their own favorite foods and traditions.

Canada also has a long history of harvest celebrations. In 1578, English explorer Martin Frobisher held a ceremony of thanks during an expedition in what is now the Canadian Arctic. Indigenous peoples, of course, had their own longstanding traditions connected to the land, food, and community.

Today, Canadian Thanksgiving is a national holiday, but how people celebrate varies across the country.

Geography connection: Canada’s large size means its climate and growing seasons vary considerably. Many communities hold celebrations in September or October, often on the first Sunday in October.

Churches and community spaces may be decorated with fruits, vegetables, grains, and flowers. Some towns hold parades, markets, or special services to celebrate the food grown by farmers.

For most of human history, people depended heavily on local farms for their food. A successful harvest could mean having enough grain, fruit, and vegetables to last through winter. A poor harvest could make life much more difficult.

Germany’s different landscapes also influence farming. One of its best-known treats is the mooncake, a round pastry that may contain sweet bean paste, lotus seed paste, or other fillings.

The full moon has special meaning in the festival because its round shape is associated with reunion and togetherness.

Although the Mid-Autumn Festival is not the same holiday as American Thanksgiving, it shares a few themes: family gatherings, special foods, and appreciation for life’s blessings.

China is an enormous country with many different climates and landscapes. Farming traditions vary from the rice-growing regions of the south to the wheat-growing areas farther north. Food traditions reflect these regional differences.

Geography connection: Find the Yangtze River on a map of China. It is one of the longest rivers in the world and has supported farming, transportation, and communities for thousands of years.

Ghana: Homowo and the Memory of Hunger

In West Africa, the Ga people of Ghana celebrate a festival called Homowo.

The name is commonly translated as “hooting at hunger.” The festival remembers a time of hunger in the community’s history and celebrates overcoming hardship.

Homowo is especially associated with the Ga people in and around Accra, Ghana’s capital. Celebrations include traditional foods, music, dancing, and community gatherings.

One important food is kpokpoi, a traditional dish made from maize. Maize is a major crop in many parts of Ghana, although the country’s farming systems also include crops such as cassava, yams, plantains, and cocoa.

Homowo is not simply a Thanksgiving holiday with a different name. It has its own cultural history and meaning. But it offers an interesting connection: food festivals can help communities remember difficult times, celebrate survival, and pass traditions to younger generations.

Geography connection: Find Ghana on the west coast of Africa. The dish is traditionally allowed to boil over, symbolizing abundance and prosperity.

The festival also honors the Sun, nature, farm animals, and the people who help grow food.

India is a huge country with many different climates. In Tamil Nadu, seasonal rainfall and irrigation play important roles in agriculture, including rice production.

Pongal is a wonderful example of how farming, climate, and culture are connected.

Geography connection: Find Tamil Nadu in southeastern India. Some are national holidays, others are religious celebrations, and some are local harvest festivals.

But they share a few interesting themes:

Food and farming: Many celebrations recognize the importance of crops, animals, and the people who produce food.

Family and community: Festivals bring people together to share meals, stories, music, and traditions.

Seasonal change: Harvest festivals often take place when crops are gathered and the seasons begin to change.

History and memory: Some celebrations remember important events, difficult times, or the traditions of earlier generations.

Geography: Climate, soil, rainfall, rivers, and growing seasons all influence what people eat and when they celebrate.

Your Thanksgiving Geography Challenge!

Ready to become a geography explorer? Try these activities.

Challenge 1: Find the festivals

On a world map, locate these places:

Iran

Israel

United States

Canada

Germany

South Korea

China

Ghana

India

Can you identify which continent each country is on? Which countries share a land border?

Challenge 2: Compare the calendars

Write down the usual time of year for each celebration:

Mehregan

Sukkot

Canadian Thanksgiving

American Thanksgiving

Germany’s Erntedankfest

South Korea’s Chuseok

China’s Mid-Autumn Festival

India’s Pongal

Which celebrations take place in autumn in the Northern Hemisphere? Which one happens in January?

Remember that some festivals follow lunar or traditional calendars, so their dates change each year.

Challenge 3: Make a harvest map

Choose a food associated with a harvest celebration, such as corn, rice, wheat, potatoes, or pumpkins.

Find out where that food grows. On a map, mark one or more growing regions and write a sentence explaining what climate or landscape helps the crop grow there.

Challenge 4: Explore a family tradition

Ask a family member or friend about a celebration involving food, gratitude, or the harvest.

What foods are served? When does the celebration happen? Is it connected to a particular season, historical event, or religious tradition?

Compare it with one of the celebrations in this article.

Happy Exploring, Geography Adventurers!

Thanksgiving is more than a turkey dinner. Around the world, celebrations bring people together to appreciate food, family, community, and the changing seasons.

From the ancient Persian festival of Mehregan to the Jewish celebration of Sukkot, Korea’s Chuseok, Ghana’s Homowo, and America’s Thanksgiving, each tradition tells a different story about the people and places where it developed.

And that is one of the most exciting things about geography: it helps us discover how people around the world live, celebrate, grow food, and connect with one another.

Keep exploring the world with Maps4Kids!

Turkey, pumpkin pie, family gatherings, and a big Thanksgiving meal!
