Yet on the familiar world map found in many classrooms, Greenland can look almost the same size as the entire African continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why does this happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is something called the <strong>Mercator projection<\/strong>. It is one of the most famous maps in history. It was created more than 450 years ago, and it was designed for a very good reason. But today, many people think we should use a different kind of map when we want to compare the true sizes of continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that debate reached the <strong>United Nations in 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is the Mercator Projection?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, let&#8217;s solve a big problem. <strong>The earth is round. Maps are flat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine trying to peel an orange and then flatten the peel onto a sheet of paper. It would be impossible to make the peel lie perfectly flat without stretching, squashing, or tearing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same thing happens when cartographers \u2014 people who make maps \u2014 turn our round planet into a flat map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no perfect world map and every projection has to make some compromises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Mercator projection<\/strong> was created by the Flemish mapmaker <strong>Gerardus Mercator in 1569<\/strong>. That made the projection extremely useful for navigation. So Mercator wasn&#8217;t trying to trick anyone. He was solving a difficult problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Does the Mercator Map Make the Poles Look So Big?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where things get interesting. Think about the Earth as a ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the <strong>Equator<\/strong>, the Earth is widest. The circles of latitude become smaller. At the North Pole, the circle has shrunk to a single point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can picture it like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Equator \u2192 big circle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>30\u00b0 north \u2192 smaller circle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>60\u00b0 north \u2192 much smaller circle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>90\u00b0 north \u2192 a point<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a globe, that makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Mercator&#8217;s map needs its lines of longitude to remain parallel. It also needs the angles and shapes of small areas to remain useful for navigation. To accomplish this, the map stretches the world more and more as you move toward the poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lines of latitude are therefore placed <strong>farther apart<\/strong> as you approach the top and bottom of the map. That stretching makes northern and southern regions appear much larger than they really are. The problem comes when we look at a Mercator map and assume that the sizes we see are the actual sizes of countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They aren&#8217;t, and this is an important geography lesson:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A map can be useful without being accurate in every way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Africa vs. Greenland: A Huge Surprise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s one of the easiest ways to understand the problem. Equal Earth is designed to preserve the <strong>relative areas<\/strong> of continents and countries much better. That means Africa looks much closer to its real size compared with Europe or Greenland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is a trade-off. Equal Earth doesn&#8217;t preserve everything perfectly. The shapes of some places become slightly different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s the great thing about mapmaking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is no perfect map.<\/strong> Different maps are good for different jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The United Nations Gets Involved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2026, the debate over world maps became international news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution encouraging countries and organizations to move toward maps that show the relative sizes of continents more accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10-1024x465.png\" alt=\"UN General Assembly\" class=\"wp-image-934\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10-1024x465.png 1024w, https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10-768x349.png 768w, https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10-370x168.png 370w, https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10-270x123.png 270w, https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10-570x259.png 570w, https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10-740x336.png 740w, https:\/\/maps4kids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-10.png 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign was led by <strong>Togo<\/strong> and supported by the <strong>African Union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vote was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>164 countries in favor<\/strong>, <strong>6 abstentions<\/strong>, <strong>1 country against<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one country voting against the resolution was the <strong>United States<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resolution promotes Equal Earth and other equal-area projections for situations where showing the true size of land areas is important. But there is an important detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Nations did <strong>not<\/strong> make the Mercator projection illegal. It didn&#8217;t order every map in the world to be thrown away. The resolution is <strong>non-binding<\/strong>, which means countries aren&#8217;t legally required to follow it. Instead, it encourages schools, governments, organizations and technology companies to consider more accurate maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Did the United States Vote Against It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is perhaps the most surprising part of the story. You might think the United States voted against the resolution because the United States looks smaller on an equal-area map. But that isn&#8217;t the official reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States government argued that the UN was spending its time on an ideological issue rather than on more important international problems. American officials also objected to language in the campaign involving ideas such as <strong>&#8220;cognitive justice&#8221;<\/strong> and historical inequalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, the disagreement wasn&#8217;t really about whether Greenland is actually 14 times smaller than Africa. Everyone agrees on the geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disagreement was about <strong>whether the United Nations should be involved in encouraging a particular way of showing that geography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s an important distinction. Two people can agree on the facts but disagree about what should be done about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can a Map Change How We See the World?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where geography becomes really fascinating. Imagine seeing the same classroom map every day for ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Europe looks fairly large. North America looks large. Greenland looks enormous. Africa looks smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, those visual impressions can become part of how you imagine the world. Supporters of the UN resolution argue that maps can influence how people think about countries and continents. Critics argue that a map projection is simply a mathematical tool and shouldn&#8217;t be treated as a political statement. There is probably some truth in both arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A map doesn&#8217;t change the Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But it can change how the Earth looks to us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So Which World Map Should We Use?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best answer is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It depends on what you are trying to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to navigate a ship? A Mercator projection can be extremely useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to compare the actual sizes of continents? An equal-area projection such as Equal Earth is much better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to see what Earth really looks like?
